MODEL PROGRESS

Here is the first of two collage pictures showing progress of the building of the model of the USS Philadelphia SSN-690 in 1:88 scale, approximately 49" in length. The USS Philadelphia Sailor's Association commissioned this project for installation at the Independence Seaport Museum located in the Penn's Landing complex along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The completed model will be unveiled and presented to a representative of the Independence Seaport Museum at the Reunion Banquet on July 22, 2017 at the Old Saybrook Fire Company's banquet facility.
Bottom Left: Detail parts for the Philadelphia SSN-960. (Left to Right) Lower Rudder, Upper Rudder, Starboard Sail Plane, Port Sail Plane, Starboard Stern Plane, Port Stern Plane, & Sail.
Bottom Right: The stern and bow sections with the main section of hull.
Bottom Center: Mel Douyette is the model builder we commissioned to produce the model.
Top:  The stern and bow sections are now attached and sanded to blend in to the mail hull section. Also the holes for mounting the boat to the base have been drilled and taped. This picture shows the boat model mounted on a "construction" base.

This second collage shows the model after major assemblies have been completed and from it we can get a vision of this project nearing completion. Thanks to Fred Nehring for taking lead on oversight, coordination, and fundraising. So far, the USS Philadelphia Sailor's Association has received donations totaling approximately half of the overall cost of the project. You can help by making contributions to our project along with your 2017 Reunion Registration Form above, or separately to the same address. Reunion Registrations are being accepted until June 20, 2017.

Old News:
in 2010 we produced a newsletter available on-line prior to the reunion. With little feedback, that project sank to the bottom of the sea. Should it be brought to the surface again? Take a look at those old issues and share your thoughts with us!
